About Us

Crafting Portland History

The Portland Woman's Club was founded in 1895. The goal of the club was to increase women's rights and opportunities in society, to further women's education, and to improve the community. Our goal today is to remain faithful to the example of active service and leadership provided by our founders. We place great value on education for women, and provide scholarships each year for women to continue their education. We also work with homeless women and children, and support an organization for children fighting cancer. In addition to our service projects, the Portland Woman's Club is a place for women to make long-lasting friendships and connections, to find support, and to have fun.

The Portland Woman's Club meets on the second Friday of the month, September though June. We meet in the banquet room at the Village Inn Restaurant (1621 NE 10th Avenue, Portland), adjacent to Lloyd Center. Meetings begin at 11:15 am, and continue over lunch. Our program usually includes a speaker who will talk on a variety of relevant topics, including political issues, matters of cultural diversity, general interest, and community needs. Recent past meetings include a presentation on personal safety for women, a visit by Oregon historical author Jane Kirkpatrick, and a speaker from a domestic violence shelter who educated us on the needs of women coming out of abusive relationships. Meetings are friendly and informal, and we always decorate our table according to the season.

Members of the Portland Woman's Club are encouraged to find and use their own unique gifts. New members are encouraged to take on leadership roles, and are supported by more experienced members who act as mentors. Members are also encouraged to bring ideas for new service projects and meeting topics.

The Portland Woman's Club is part of the Oregon Federation of Women's Clubs, as well as the General Federation of Women's Clubs (headquartered in Washington, DC). Members are encouraged to participate in both state and national events, as well as take on leadership roles at state and national levels.
